The opportunity
An exciting opportunity exists in our IT department within the Metals division for a Specialist, Data Services. The purpose of this position is to ensure the effective management and governance of Sherritt’s data assets, while safeguarding data integrity, quality, and security.

Our standard work schedule includes a full-time on-site presence to foster collaboration and community. We recognize the importance of flexibility in today’s dynamic work environment. We offer adaptable flexibility to ensure that our team members can succeed while balancing personal commitments.

The successful candidate may be based in either our Fort Saskatchewan or Calgary office.

In this role, you will be accountable for:
  • Leading the development and execution of the annual data governance plan in alignment with organizational strategy and business priorities.
  • Overseeing enterprise data governance activities and serving as the primary liaison between the Data Governance Committee, data owners, data stewards, and business stakeholders.
  • Ensuring compliance with data governance standards, policies, and applicable regulations by identifying and managing data-related risks and monitoring regulatory changes.
  • Driving continuous improvement in data quality, integrity, and trust, and supporting effective data stewardship across the organization.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and advisory support on data governance, data management, compliance, security, and data use.
  • Embedding data governance principles into business initiatives, projects, and technology solutions through collaboration and consultation.

Skills and attributes for success:
  • 10+ years of experience in enterprise data governance, data management, data privacy, and enterprise content management within complex organizations is required.
  • University degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience is required.
  • ITIL certification(s) and project management experience are considered assets.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing data governance strategies and business plans aligned to organizational objectives.
  • Strong understanding of data governance and management frameworks (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK), including data ownership and stewardship.
  • Applied experience with manufacturing data environments and operational, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
  • Solid technical knowledge of IT environments, including databases, analytics, reporting, and data modeling tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and influence stakeholders across executive, senior leadership, and operational teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, with the ability to implement practical governance solutions.
  • Working knowledge of Python, Machine Language, Artificial Intelligence.
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint, Purview, data fabric, and azure platform along with Databricks and Fivetran would be considered beneficial.
